Filing as a couple

Married or in a registered partnership: one return, who fills in what, and how Geneva sets the rate.

One return for two

If you’re married or in a registered partnership and live together, you file one return. Your incomes and your wealth are added up, whatever your marital property regime. If you live together without being married or registered, you each file your own.

31 December decides

Your civil status (état civil) on 31 December counts for the whole year. Married during the year: one return, with everything about the couple from 1 January. Separated or divorced during the year: each of you files your own return for the whole year.

Who fills in what

The person named on the left of the return fills in the c.A columns (contribuable A), and their spouse, on the right, fills in c.B. Fill in your own carefully: the tax office uses them to work out each person’s share of the tax, shown on a breakdown (scission informative) sent with the bill.

How Geneva sets the rate

To soften the effect of adding two incomes, Geneva divides the couple’s total income by two to find the tax rate (splitting intégral). If you both work, there is also a deduction for two-income couples (déduction sur le gain de l’un des époux), for cantonal and federal tax.

Responsible together

Spouses who live together are jointly liable for the couple’s total tax.

With Taxpresso

Tell Claude you’re married: Taxpresso then asks its questions for each of you, and files documents by person.

Based on the 2025 Geneva tax guide, the latest published, the 2026 federal instructions and the laws in force. Official pages checked on 13 October 2026. These guides explain how things work. They don’t replace the official documents or tax advice. If in doubt, ask the cantonal tax office (AFC).
